Saint Soleil School

Voodoo appears very early in Haitian paintinfs. In 1970, Tiga (Jean-Claude Garoute) and Maud Robart set an art center that will welcome countryside artists, under the name of Saint-Soleil School. It is set near Petionville in Soisson-la-Montagne, 50 kilometers out of Port-au-Prince. There, simple workers are given space and paiting material and they are encouraged to paint the voodoo thematic. In 1975, the school is visited by Andre Malraux who will give a mystical aura in “l’Intemporel”. Five of the main artists of the school: Louisiane Saint Fleurant, Denis Smith, Dieuseul Paul, Levoy Exil and Prospère Pierre Louis will later separate.
